The Last Summer

The Last Summer
my wandering eyes get lost in the colours of the sunset
as the easy summer breeze
tickles my cheek
I close my eyes, and allow the sun’s soft rays to warm my forehead
I exhale
right here, right now - time freezes
I am a child again
moments from summers past shine so brightly
in my mind
waving sparklers through the air until flickers of fire catch the light
of the stars in the sky
running through the fields, so carefree
perfectly content, sunkissed
back when there was not a fear in the world
just sweet. summer. bliss.
all at once
the swift warm breeze carries me back to the present
I open my eyes
and rest my gaze on the sea before me
broad, boundless
the vast waters beckon me - summon me
to go forward and explore
for
the world - my world - is waiting
for me
I can’t quite see across the water
into the horizon
but maybe,
maybe
that’s the way it’s supposed to be
because here - right here, right now - in this placid, perfect warmth
of my summer
I am at peace.
